Researching renewable technologies
Dalquharran Geothermal
Dalquharran Estate sits upon redundant mines that were once the lifeblood of the local community. Strathclyde and Glasgow Universities are carrying out feasibility studies to identify the level of heat resource in the mines. If successful, this energy source will fuel ‘controlled environment agriculture’ which could produce fresh fruit and vegetables, all year round.
Underground mines are rich sources of heat, heat that can be harnessed to produce energy for local buildings, streets, and even towns. The Cairnhill group are currently carrying out borehole drilling, with the support of the Universities mentioned, which will assess the useable heat in the mines. This is a clean, green energy source which, if harnessed, can drastically reduce the carbon footprint of any operations on the site.
Armed with this knowledge, The Cairnhill Group can build in the potential to use renewable technologies that benefit the local community. For example, a district heating system that could potentially provide heat to the village of Dailly, which is not on the National Grid for gas. Strong hope is that the mines that once sat at the heart of this community, are once again able to provide for its people.
